Presented at ManilART 2022, the Philippines’ leading international art fair, JOY UNITED transformed visitors’ emotional responses into a continuously evolving collective visual composition.
As participants entered the installation, their facial expressions and emotional reactions were translated into changing fields of colour, light and abstract forms. The artwork was never repeated: each encounter altered the composition and contributed to the atmosphere of the space.
Developed in response to the festival theme “Forging Futures,” JOY UNITED explored how technology can become a medium for participation rather than observation. Visitors were not simply looking at an artwork — their presence became part of its visual structure.
The installation brought together emotion, artificial intelligence and collective authorship, creating a temporary portrait of the audience that changed throughout the fair.

"Another highlight of the art fair is an interactive installation by German artists Juliana and Andrey Vrady. Entitled “Joy United” and described as a “dialogue between humans and technology,” the exhibition invites fairgoers to have their emotions detected by computer sensors, who run these by software codes and generate them into art via artificial intelligence. What emerges is a projection of different colors and patterns corresponding to the person’s detected moods."
